Fascist Turkic Groups Falsify History: Fakhteh Luna Zamani & ADAPP

Fakhteh Luna Zamani is a liar.  However, Ms. Zamani is no ordinary liar.  In a deliberate effort to create separatism and to prompt a civil war in Iran, Ms. Zamani appeared before the United States Congress and falsely claimed that Iran was attempting to "Persianize" the name of a province in Northern Iran named "Azerbaijan."  The essence of Ms. Zamani's claim to the U.S. Congress was that Iran was trying to falsify the history of its own province by erasing the purportedly 'original' Turkish identity of Azerbaijan.  Ms. Zamani claimed that a 'massive Persianization of the name of Azerbaijan' was undertaken by the Iranian government.  The truth of the matter - as you will see from official government records - is that Azerbaijan has always been a historically Persian name and continues to be.  One cannot "Persianize" something that was Persian to begin with.  Azerbaijan has been a Persian name for thousands of years.

A little background is necessary to understand the historical context at issue:  In the 1800s the Russian military seized an Iranian province named "Aran."  Aran (province #1) is immediately North of and adjacent to the Iranian province of Azerbaijan (province #2).  After the Bolsheviks came to power in Russia, Soviet Russia made a concerted effort to change the name of the province it seized (Aran) to the same name as Iranian-Azerbaijan.   In other words, Russia created a second "Azerbaijan."  The reason Russia employed this name-game was so that it could later use the pretext of "reuniting" both Azerbaijans to seize more land from Iran.  As a result of this history, today there is a nation called "The Republic of Azerbaijan" (born from the collapse of the Soviet Union) and there also exists the original and authentic province of Iranian-Azerbaijan (the real Azerbaijan).  People are often confused as to why there are two Azerbaijans: one is really "Aran" and the other is "Azerbaijan."  Both are historically Persian territories.

There are a wealth of historical and scholarly texts describing the origin of the name Azerbaijan as being Persian - I will not bore the reader with those citations.  To keep the proof simple - I will show you the official embassy publication of the Republic of Azerbaijan (scanned and reproduced below).  The government of the falsified "Azerbaijan" (formerly the Iranian province of Aran) admits in its official records that the name of their country is Persian in origin.  The records clearly state that Azerbaijan is the surname of one the Persian generals that served the Persian King Darius.  That General's name was Atropatkan (which is written as Azerbaijan).  Ms. Zamani lied to the U.S. Congress:  One cannot "Persianize" something that was Persian to begin with.

Here is the scan from the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan:

Here is the enlarged portion of the text prepared by the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan noting that the name "Azerbaijan" is derived from the name of the Persian General "Atropatkan" (a commander that served King Darius of Persia):

Iranians don't dispute that Atropat was the Persian General of the Persian King Darius, and as we've seen from a scan of the Republic of Azerbaijan's official website, they also admit it.  The bottom-line is that Fakhteh Luna Zamani is dishonest; the U.S. Congress should also look into whether she has given any other false testimony before.

For those interested in the history of Persian General Atropat(kan), [fn 1] here's is a link:

[Fn 1]    According to the Encyclopedia of Islam, the name of the province was pronounced as: In Middle Persian the name of the province was called Ātropātākān / Ātorpātākān, older new-Persian Ādharbādhagān آذربادگان/  آذرآبادگان, Ādharbāyagān, at present Āzerbāydjān/Āzarbāydjān (Greek ᾿Ατροπατήνη, Byzantine Greek ᾿Αδραβιγάνων, Armenian Atrpatakan, Syriac Adhorbāyghān).   The name Atropat in Middle Persian was transformed to Adharbad and is connected with Zoroastrianism. A famous Persian Zoroastrian priest by the name Adarbad Mahraspandan hailed from ancient Iranian-Azerbaijan as well as the name-sake General Atropat(kan) ( اترپتکان ).  The suffix "kan" means that this was the province General Atropat (Persian: Âtarepâta) was responsible for as a governor.
